Q

The Story of Trash: Where Does Everything Go?Every day, people all over the world throw away billions of tons of waste. When you finish a bottle of juice, break an old plastic toy, or do not finish your dinner, you probably throw these things into a trash can. After the garbage truck collects them from your house, you might never think about them again. However, these objects do not just disappear into thin air. They travel to many different places, and their journeys can affect our planet for hundreds or even thousands of years. Understanding where our trash goes is the first step to solving one of the biggest problems of the modern world. For a very long time, the simplest way to deal with garbage was to dig a large hole in the ground and fill it with trash. These places are called landfills. Today, landfills are still the most common way to handle waste in many countries. However, a modern landfill is not just an open hole. It is a carefully designed place. Engineers line the bottom of the hole with thick plastic and clay. This is an important step because it stops dangerous liquids from leaking into the ground and poisoning the clean drinking water under the earth.Although landfills are helpful, they cause serious environmental problems. When millions of tons of trash are packed tightly together underground, there is no air left inside the pile. Because there is no oxygen, the waste breaks down very slowly. For example, a simple plastic water bottle can take more than four hundred and fifty years to decompose in a landfill. A paper newspaper, which usually rots quickly in a garden, can stay perfectly readable even after thirty years inside a dark, airless landfill. Furthermore, as the waste slowly rots without oxygen, it creates a dangerous gas called methane. Methane is a major reason why our planet is getting warmer every year.Because landfills take up too much space and damage the air, some countries choose another method called incineration. This means the trash is taken to a special factory and burned at very high temperatures. Incineration has some great benefits. It can reduce the volume of trash by ninety percent, which means a huge pile of garbage becomes a very small pile of ash. Also, many modern incineration factories use the heat from the fire to create electricity for nearby homes. However, burning trash is not a perfect solution. When plastic, wood, and metal are burned together, the smoke can carry deadly chemicals into the sky. Even though modern factories use expensive filters to clean the smoke before it leaves the chimney, some pollution still escapes into the air we breathe. Also, the ash that is left behind after the fire is often highly toxic. Workers must be very careful when they bury this dangerous ash back into special landfills, or it will hurt the local environment. To avoid the problems of both landfills and burning, recycling has become popular around the globe. Recycling means turning old materials into brand-new products. For example, old aluminum soda cans can be melted down and made into new cans in just six weeks. Using recycled aluminum uses ninety-five percent less energy than making a new can from metals found in the ground. Similarly, old glass bottles can be crushed and melted to make new glass jars forever without losing any quality.Unfortunately, recycling is much more complicated than most people think, and this is where many people make mistakes. Plastic is a great example of the hidden problems in recycling. There are many different types of plastic, such as the clear plastic used for water bottles and the thick plastic used for shampoo containers. These plastics cannot be melted together. If a person puts the wrong type of plastic into a recycling bin, the entire batch of recycling might become useless. When this happens, workers have to throw all of it into a regular trash truck, and it ends up in a landfill anyway.Another big problem is food pollution. If you throw a plastic pizza box into the recycling bin, but the box still has cheese and oil on it, it cannot be recycled. The grease ruins the recycling process. Therefore, people must wash their plastic and glass containers with water before they recycle them. Because washing takes time and effort, many people skip this step, which causes tons of useful materials to be wasted every day.In recent years, scientists have found that a huge amount of our plastic trash does not even stay on land. Millions of tons of plastic escape from rivers and coastal cities into the ocean every year. Once plastic enters the ocean, the sun and the waves slowly break it down into tiny pieces. These pieces are smaller than a grain of rice and are called microplastics.Microplastics are a terrible danger to marine life. Sea turtles often mistake floating plastic bags for jellyfish, which are their favorite food. When a turtle eats a plastic bag, the plastic fills its stomach, and the animal can die of hunger because it cannot eat real food anymore. Smaller fish also swallow microplastics because they look like tiny sea insects. When larger fish eat the small fish, the plastic travels up the food chain. In the end, humans who love to eat seafood might accidentally eat the very same microplastics that they threw into the trash can months ago.Because recycling is difficult and pollution is growing, environmental groups now say that we should focus on the "Three Rs": Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle. Most importantly, they argue that "Reduce" is the most powerful tool we have. Reducing means buying fewer things and creating less waste in the first place. For example, instead of buying a plastic bottle of water every day, you can carry a reusable metal bottle. Instead of taking a new plastic bag at the supermarket, you can bring your own cloth bag from home. Many governments are now creating new laws to force people and companies to reduce waste. Some cities make people pay money for every bag of regular trash they throw away, while recycling remains free. This encourages people to think carefully before they buy products with too much packaging. Other countries have banned single-use plastic items entirely, such as plastic straws, plastic cups, and plastic knives. The story of trash shows us that every choice we make has a consequence. When we buy a product, we are not just paying for the item itself; we are also choosing what will happen to the earth when we are finished with it. A plastic spoon might only be useful to you for ten minutes while you eat your ice cream, but it will live on somewhere on Earth for centuries after you throw it away. By changing our daily habits and understanding the long journey of garbage, we can help keep our oceans clean, our air fresh, and our land safe for future generations.Short Answer QuestionsWhy do engineers place thick plastic and clay at the very bottom of modern landfills before putting trash inside?Explain how a paper newspaper can remain perfectly readable after thirty years inside a landfill, even though paper usually rots quickly in a garden.Name two distinct benefits of using incineration factories instead of using traditional landfills to manage city waste. Why is a plastic pizza box with cheese and grease on it rejected by recycling factories, and what happens to it as a result? What are "microplastics," and how do they travel from the ocean back into the bodies of human beings?According to the text, why do environmental groups believe that "Reduce" is a more powerful and important action than "Recycle"?How do laws that make people pay money for every regular trash bag help reduce the total amount of waste in a city?
